Five Geese 2005 Old Vine Grenache Shiraz

Variety:   Grenache 80% (78 year old dry grown), Shiraz 20%

Region:    McLaren Vale, 100%

Colour:  A very attractive deep crimson red.

Nose:  This wine exhibits the distinct Grenache perfume. There are concentrated rose petals, ripe berries, and there are even hints of confectionery. The nose is both complex and interesting, showing signs of barrel maturation without any obvious oak.

Palate:  The 2005 five geese Grenache Shiraz is a generous, fruity wine with a rich and full flavoured palate. There are ripe berry flavours with the warmth of the dry grown Grenache showing as strong, earthy, and rustic flavours, with a lingering finish. This wine will benefit from some bottle age, but opens up beautifully in the glass. .

Oak: Aged 9 months in second use American oak hogsheads.

Analysis:    Alc/Vol:  14.5%; pH:  3.27; TA: 6.27; SO2 Free 31/Total 61; VA:  0.55.

Aging Potential: This wine will improve with bottle age and has the potential to develop with careful medium-term cellaring.

Food Ideas:  This variety has excellent food compatibility. The soft tannin structure, red fruit flavours and medium body makes it versatile, but ideally suited to meat dishes, or full flavoured fish that has had roasting or grilling preparation.  This wine is a mouthful that needs rich, hearty food to complement it.

Winemaker:   Mike Farmilo

Viticulturists:    Sue Trott and Jonathon Trott
